Information Communication and Technology

Which sector (business, education, energy, health, entertainment, manufacturing, construction and etc.) do you think had the biggest impact in terms of the effect of ICT in the Philippines? Give a brief statement explaining how did this sector contribute from ICT.

In my perspective, the Education Sector have the biggest impact in terms of the effect of ICT in the Philippines. The education in the country is greatly enhanced and innovated nowadays due to the ICT’s contribution. ICT, or known as the Information and Communications Technology, can impact student learning when teachers are digitally literate and understand how to integrate it into their curriculum. Schools use various ICT tools in order to communicate, create, evaluate, store, and manage information with great efficiency and effectivity for learning. ICT also becomes integral in demonstrating interaction within classroom discussions. It provides relevant information from trusted sources, software and apps for interactive exercises, and many more. Some of the application of ICT in the education includes the Flipped Classroom, ICT Learning Development, E-readers, and the usage of Digital Technology. Primarily, all of these advantages are clearly seen in the present generation. The quality education that the students are attaining today is one of the most significant impacts of ICT, and also the major contributor to its enhancement in the country.

Name an application or website that helped you in your life as a person and also tell how this application or website helped you.

Facebook as the Most Popular Social Networking Site

Facebook is one of the most popular social networking sites of all times which cuts down physical boundaries, provides benefits for various purposes, and contributes in one’s life as a person. This application or site is known to be free, yet the best medium for communication, thus giving one a limitless access anytime and everywhere. It also helps in creating a connection to significant people to stay in touch, making friends with others across the globe, establishing good relationships, and keeping for updates for school, work, or casual events. It has the messaging features for group discussion and sending of essential attachments for academic and work use. In terms of entertainment, Facebook can provide games and in-apps for enjoyment, competitions, and easing one’s stress. Useful videos are also uploaded such as motivationals, educationals, scientific discoveries, life tips, and many more, which give good influences for one’s development. Furthermore, Facebook offers email addresses in important sites like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Edmodo for an easy account access establishment. Facebook can be a source of information and news. It is one of the best sources to stay updated with the latest news and updates. Facebook also helps in reminding people that they must be careful and mindful in what they are doing in this site, therefore giving them resilience in any risks of theft. Online Safety, Security, Ethics, and Etiquette

Share an experience that you have always tend to do but later did you discover that it is not a standard of ONLINE SAFETY, SECURITY, ETHICS, AND ETIQUETTE.

Weak Password

During my early years of using Social Media, I tend to have weak passwords for most of my accounts in order for them to be easily remembered and accessed. It is later found out that one of my neighbors has leaked my password and put some malicious contents on my accounts. Afterward, I change the password of every account I have with much complexity, which is recommended according to the standard. A strong password must be unique and complex, with at least ten characters long and mixed letters, numbers, and symbols. Having this kind of password currently helps me a lot to keep all of the personal information safe from any hackers and online thieves.

Public Personal Information

Years ago, I tend to have my personal information like full name, address, birthdates, school, and more to be publicly exposed in most of my social media accounts. However, after watching some videos about online safety, I have realized that all of my information are at risk from any cybercriminal or online hackers. With this standard, I become much cautious for safety and use privacy settings to keep my information from the public. Most social networking sites like Facebook provide privacy settings to control the exposure of everything posted in the media. Currently, my information are now hidden within “Friends” or even “Only Me” in order to be much secured and manageable.

Accepting Terms and Condition Without Reading It

Usually, I have been accessing various sites without reading their Terms and Conditions, which is not part of the online etiquette. This Terms and Conditions, or known as the Terms of Service Agreement, is a set of regulations which user must agree to follow in order to use a particular online service. It also legally acts as a binding contract between the service and the users. It often informs the kind of data the users collect within and how should they use these data. Significantly, it helps in preventing abuses, disclaiming issues, terminating accounts, limiting liability, and setting government law. Thus, it is a must and important to read the agreement before taking any acts of using respected service. Obtaining these information, I become more attentive in accessing online media with their rules to avoid undesirable consequences.

Using of Pirated Software

There are several times when downloading of cracked files of famous games and software becomes a trend among with my friends. Since it is free, we tend to use them for entertainment or work purposes with much ease and accessibility. However, I later found out that it is unethical to access pirated ones. It is even stated in the Terms and Conditions that this kind of act disobeys the law. Moreover, there are also disadvantages of using them, which includes the following: no one can get updates in using pirated software; they put the system at risk, they have no customer support and additional services, and they tend to crash a lot. At the present, I have been using software paid by the internet café in order to maintain the safety and premium user experience.

Google Tool

What Google Tool is the best for you and why? You may include a situation where it is helpful in work, school, or community.

Google Earth showing a randomly generated geographical surface image of a certain location.
Google Earth shows a randomly generated geographical surface image of a certain location.

For me, Google Earth is one of the best Google Tools due to its importance in real-life applications.

Knowingly, it is easy to use and presents a great deal of information that applies to topics that are addressed in geoscience courses and many other educational settings. It also allows placing this information in combination on a three-dimensional model of the Earth, and facilitates understanding of the Earth system and the many subject areas that comprise, including the natural sciences, social sciences, history, art, engineering and topic that has geographical components. Information that can be displayed on Google Earth composes of aerial and satellite imagery, the numerous layers offered by Google’s database, and a huge amount of third-party data made available by the Google Earth Community and on other websites.

With this tool, students can now browse on their own and participate in any structured inquiry-based explorations. Since Google Earth is available to download for free for all the major operating systems, they can use it in school as well as for homework or fun. They can easily create their own data and save the information in various data files or as saved images for incorporation into oral presentations or reports. This data can be rendered on maps in combination with any other data made available to the students.

For the teachers, Google Earth can be used as an effective presentation tool for classes and graphics for lectures. They can also use it to research topics for use in a variety of educational venues that includes electronic presentations and printed materials for maps or other graphical representations. Google Earth additionally presents advice on how to use Google Earth in educational settings.

Google Earth is also a great research tool. Its graphics are composed of information about the natural landscape and human infrastructure on the Earth’s surface. It presents panoramic photographs for many cities, towns, and other places around the world. Its terrain and 3D representations contribute information for excellent Google Earth experience. Many websites offer data designed specifically for use in Google Earth, including the imagery and vector data adapted for its significant use.

Google Earth has important roles in mitigating geographical hazards due to its feature known as the Google Earth Weather. For years, its quality has improved since then. One can access the Weather layer in Google Earth by enabling it in the left navigation bar under Primary Database. The weather layer is truly impressive with its satellite images of clouds, actual real-time radar data, and even real-time temperatures. This layer in Google Earth can help one follow weather patterns all around the world, preparing them for any disasters and calamities.

Remarkably, Google has been integrating Google Earth in other mapping applications including Google Maps. For developers and professionals, Google Maps APIs with its integration give a very effective way to store data in servers, such as location-based information including environmental data, server monitoring and alerts, and population and health information. They also enable individuals to develop customized Google Maps applications that contain buttons, forms, panels, photographs, and specialized map layers added to the conventional Google Maps interface.
Google Earth primarily becomes so useful in academic, work, and even community purposes. With its application, it can effectively improve the lifestyle, education, and awareness of the people across the globe.

ICT as a Platform for Change

As a Digital Citizen, I will be obliged to use ICT properly and positively in accordance to Digital Citizenship.

Choose one from nine elements of digital citizenship. Write the element title, its definition, importance, advantages, and disadvantages.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION

Digital Communication as a Part of Global Innovation

Definition

Digital Communication is defined as the electronic exchange of information. It happens when the information is digitally encoded as discreet signals and electronically transferred to the receivers through various channels. Examples of such channels include the copper wires, optical fibers, wireless communication channels, storage media, and computer buses.

Importance

Modern life is currently empowered by technology. The digital world is also expanding and becoming more powerful. Years ago, there were only desktops that were about a foot thick and ran pretty slow. But, people nowadays can able to browse the web with just a click and touch of fingers to their phones. During travels and trips to some places, they are also using GPS for accurate navigation. The web is communicating with the users to tell them where to go as if they are talking to them in real life. This is how digital communication can help one’s life significantly.

Digital methods of communication are faster, more versatile, flexible, practical and streamlined. Thus, it is unsurprising that once the technology became available, people began to move into the digital age. It is undeniable that they need digital communication. People need something that can connect them with anyone without exception. They can utilize digital communication to stay in closer contact with their close ones. That is why digital communication is important, because they need it in this generation.

Digital communication has become indispensable. In fact, researches state that there are approximately two billion people who are connected to the Internet daily. Most people all around the globe use digital ones. Without digital communication, they would be only still writing to each other through letters and mails, or just having a face-to-face conversation.

Therefore, digital communication is greatly important. However, people must also learn how each type of technology works, their capabilities, their limitations, and their usage in order to provide efficiency, security, and appropriateness in utilizing these kinds of tools.

Advantages

There are some advantages in digital communication which include the following:

  • Digital signals carry more information per second than analog signals.
  • Digital signals maintain their quality over long distances better than analog signals.
  • Good processing techniques are available for digital signals such as source coding, channel coding, equalization, etc.
  • Privacy is preserved by using data encryption. Only permitted receivers can be allowed to detect the transmitted data.
  • High-speed computers and powerful software design tools are available.
  • The compatibility of digital communication systems with Internet has opened new area of applications.
  • Digital communication systems are cheaper due to advances in digital VLSI technology.
  • Digital communication is adaptive to other digital domains like VLSI, DSP, data compression etc.
  • Digital information can be saved and retrieved when necessary.
  • Large data storage is possible.

Disadvantages

There are certain disadvantages in digital communication which include the following:

  • More bandwidth is required than that for analog systems.
  • Digital communication needs synchronization in synchronous modulation.
  • There is high power consumption due to various stages of conversion.
  • Complex circuits and more sophisticated device making are some drawbacks of digital system.
  • Digital communication can introduce various sampling errors.
  • Square wave is more affected by noise.
  • Digital communication is more inefficient than actual face-to-face conversation.
  • Large volume of messages can be overwhelming and hard to follow, even stress-inducing.
